Whether you are a job seeker needing a new headshot, a professional needing to update your or your company's headshots for your website or social media I have got you! There is nothing worse than paying for something and not being happy with the end result. As a professional photographer who has done many headshot sessions, here are my top five tips for getting the best images! (PS read to the bottom to get my full guide to preparing for your headshot session FREE!)
1. MAKE SURE YOU CLOTHING FITS
This may sound like a no brainer. But I have had several times where people bring an outfit to wear that is either too big or too small. Neither is a good look. Try the outfit you are planning to wear on before your session. Look in the mirror. Still not sure? Ask a friend or family member for their opinion. Oversized clothes give an unprofessional and sloppy look. Clothes that are too small will show any bulges you that you probably don't want to show and will actually make you look heavier than you are.
2. NO WRINKLES
This seems like common sense and I wish it was. But from experience I can tell you I make it a point to say it multiple times. If you are not planning on wearing your outfit for a headshot then bring it on a hanger. Don't just throw it in the back of your car and expect it to look sharp and professional. If you are wearing it for the entire day, choose something that will not wrinkle easily as you wait to have your image taken.
3. PRACTICE
This is especially for the people who do not get photos taken on a regular basis. Practice your smile in the mirror. Yes that's weird and slightly uncomfortable but you need to know if you like a big toothy smile, a small smile or none at all. When your smile is big does it make your eyes squinty? or show more wrinkles than you would like? What is the image you want to project? Do you want an open friendly look or one that is more serious? Knowing these things in advance will greatly improve the odds of you loving the images you get.
4. YOUR LOOK
There are so many things that go in to the look you will be putting out there for the world to see. It is important to know your brand, whether that is your personal brand of who you whether as a job seeker or as business owner looking to update your company website. Your look has to coincide with the goals you have. That being said, in general for a professional look you will want to go with solid colors and small prints. Stay away from bold colors and big patterns as they draw the viewer away from your face.
For companies that are doing multiple headshots for their website or a group shot.Choose 3 colors (not including black and white) for your employees to choose from. You usually don't want everyone to match (unless your employees have a certain uniform or company shirt). You also do not want one person to stand out more than the other. If for example everyone wears blue, grey or black and one person shows up in hot pink they will stand out.
5. COMMUNICATION
This is probably the most important tip I can give you for a headshot or any other type of photography session. Choose a photographer who is willing to take the time to listen to what your vision is, one that asks questions and can help guide you. Tell your photographer about your past photography experiences, what you have like and not liked. In my experience there are two types of people, those who love having their pictures taken and those who dread it. If you fall in the later category it is usually because you didn't have a good past experience or there is something about yourself that you are critical of. Both of these can be fixed with good communication and a good photographer. A good photographer can pose you to minimize area you don't want to draw attention to, they should know how to use lighting to flatter your best features and they should have post processing skills that don't make you look plastic but can make minor adjustments like whitening teeth or removing a blemish. My goal as a photographer is to show the best you.
